The Way Back Machine

It's been 20 years since Ric's radio show began airing on WMAL in Washington, D.C. Take a quick stroll down memory lane and see how things got started.

  • Ric in the WMAL radio studio in Washington, D.C. in 1992. Not only did he host the show alone back then, but he also operated all the controls. The show now airs nationwide on nearly 60 stations.

  • In 1993 Ric was presented with the Achievement in Radio award for Best Talk Show Host in Washington D.C. Fast forward 20 years later: Ric was recognized this year by Talker's magazine as one of the 100 most important talk show hosts in America.

  • Ric now has some extra company on air in the way of Brandon Corso and Anderson Wozny, affectionately known as "Branderson."

  • The radio show sometimes takes Ric out of the studio. Here he broadcasts live on New York affiliate WABC from Ground Zero on the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

  • 1992 marked the first of a series of community service events designed by Ric to help educate listeners about personal finance. Education and sharing knowledge is a passion of Ric's and carries through to everything he is involved with.

  • The Financial Expos were all–day events and included a live broadcast. The events also raised thousands of dollars for local and national charities.

  • The Expos also featured Ric presenting seminars on a variety of financial topics.

  • No notebook computers or flat-panel TVs. Presentations back in 1992 were done with overhead projectors and pull-up screens. Here, Ric is introduced by local radio personality Mark Weaver.

  • Ric's first educational audio series in 1992 – a set of six cassette tapes!

  • Ric holds the first "Truth About Money" seminar in 1992. The 10 and a half hour course is destined to become his first book, which makes the bestseller lists of The Washington Post, The New York Times, BusinessWeek, University Press and USA Today.

  • One of Ric's early book signings was at Tower Records and Books, where the store created signature artwork for the event.

  • Ric on the old set of NewsChannel 8, where he hosted his first television show. His newest TV show airs weekly on Public Television stations across the country.

  • Ric's original newsletter from January 1989, including an announcement of the opening of our new office. We now have 30 offices nationwide.

  • In 1992, Edelman Financial Services was comprised of just a handful of people. The firm that Ric and Jean founded now employs almost 300 staff and manages $7.8 billion for nearly 17,000 clients.

  • Ric and Ed Moore, President of Edelman Financial Services. Check out that old computer! And a telephone book? Wow, how things have changed.
