You Be the Judge - The Verdict
For Immediate Release
July 21, 2010
The judge ruled for the taxpayer. Though Singleton- Clarke switched jobs after she completed her degree and her new job title was different than her old one, the judge found that her tasks, activities and responsibilities were nearly identical - even though her subsequent job description said that a master's degree in public health was preferred. She was allowed to retain the $14,787 deduction.
Not only did Singleton-Clarke beat the IRS, she did so while representing herself before the tax court! Such a feat is rare.
